USPS to Showcase Tamaqua Station

The railroad station in Tamaqua will be among five from across the nation to be featured on stamps in 2023, the U.S. Postal Service announced Monday.

“Noteworthy railroad stations began brightening the American landscape by the 1870s and although many were torn down once they had outlived their original purpose, hundreds survived,” the Postal Service said in a news release. “This issuance of 20 stamps features five architectural gems that continue to play important roles in their communities.”

The Tamaqua stamp shows the red brick station under a blue sky with a puffy white cloud. The American flag that flies from its roof is unfurled in the wind.

During its peak years from the 1920s to the 1940s, more than 40 passenger trains stopped daily at the Tamaqua station. Popular destinations included Mauch Chunk, Williamsport, Philadelphia, Reading, Atlantic City, New Jersey, New York, Niagara Falls and Chicago, according to the website.

In 2004, a $1.5 million restoration project was completed, and the train station now serves as a restaurant, open Wednesday to Sunday.

In 2020, Andy Muller Jr. (RBMN’s CEO) spent tens of thousands of dollars upgrading the platform area in front of the station. Lighting, fencing, and paving was included to match the design of the station. Excursion trains periodically stop year-round at the station.

In addition to the train stations, the Postal Service is releasing a wide range of new stamp art next year.

“The 2023 stamp program features a broad range of subjects and designs. These miniature works of art highlight our unique American culture and offer a broad selection for those looking to collect stamps or send their mail around the nation or the world,” USPS Stamp Services Director William Gicker was quoted in the release.
