Lehigh Gorge Trains are operated by the Reading & Northern Railroad from Downtown Jim Thorpe into the Lehigh Gorge State Park and back.

Yes, the trains will run regardless of the weather. If advanced tickets were purchased, and you cannot ride due to poor weather conditions, you may exchange your tickets for a future trip. All unused tickets are good forever.

Tickets are non-refundable but can be used for other trips in the future if the entire ticket with stub is given to a member of management or a ticket agent.
Tickets that only have one stub remaining will not be accepted to exchange for future trips.
If the future trip is a different, more costly trip, the ticket may be exchanged with you paying the difference.
A ticket purchased is good forever until exchanged for a different trip.
Tickets must be treated as cash.

Tickets can be purched here on this website under "Regular Schedule". Just click the dropdown next to the Month, then click on the time you want to ride next to the specific day.
Tickets can also be purchased the day of the trip at the ticket window in Jim Thorpe, or tickets can be bought in advance at least one day prior to train ride over the phone for any special excursions (Depending on ticket availability) with the exception of trips leaving out of Jim Thorpe in October.
Advance tickets are strongly recommended as to not be disappointed.

The regularly scheduled trains leave downtown Jim Thorpe and parallel the Lehigh River north into the beautiful Lehigh Gorge State Park. The train ride is approximately 16 miles round trip, and returns back to downtown Jim Thorpe.

The train ride is 70 minutes in duration with the exception of October, when train rides are 45 minutes due to increased popularity and demand. The train ride continues to offer beautiful colors and scenery of the Lehigh Gorge State Park with condensed trips in October.

At the railroad, we pride ourselves for on time passenger train departures. Due to the fact that the railroad operates regularly scheduled trains, every effort to adhere to our advertised schedule is maintained and unless there are extenuating circumstances beyond our control, the 1:00 PM train (and all scheduled trains) will leave on time.

Standard Coach is a passenger car with bus style seating and windows that open and close. Seats can face each other, each seat can hold 2 people comfortably.
Open Air is a passenger car that has a roof over the top, a bench that runs down the middle, and the sides of the train car are completely open. People can get up and walk around or stand in this coach to look at the passing scenery.

Yes, restrooms are available on all trains. We pride ourselves on clean restrooms, please let us know if our restrooms are not up to your expectation.

The Bike train is an opportunity to ride the train from Jim Thorpe station to White Haven, PA, and then return by bike on the trail for a 25 mile bike ride slightly downhill.
Round trip is 50 miles, the train takes 1 hour to get from downtown Jim Thorpe to White Haven and 30 minutes to unload bikes.
It takes most people 3 to 4 hours to bike the returning 25 mile trail.

Purchasing tickets in advance is strongly recommended.

If you ride trains out of Jim Thorpe station, there is an ADA certified lift.
Most wheelchairs will fit inside the standard coaches.
Also, the lift can be used to place wheelchairs on the open air cars. Other locations on the railroad do not have ADA lifts.

Passengers are welcome to bring any food and/or drinks they wish to enjoy onboard, with the exception of alcoholic beverages.

Yes, well behaved dogs are allowed to ride on any of our 70-minute or 45-minute Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway trips. They will even get their own special ticket, which is free of charge. Be sure to let your ticket agent know!

Yes, discount available on Standard Coach and Open-Air Car seating.
To get the discount this procedure must be followed:
All group discounted tickets must be purchased in advance.
There are no group discounts given the day of riding the train.
We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and checks.
Payment by check must be made at least two weeks in advance.
Tickets can either be mailed or picked up the day of riding the train.
The person representing the group must have a final accurate head count when ordering tickets.
There are no group discounts during Fall Foliage Season.

The Reading & Northern only has 2 steam engines. We have no backup. Everybody realizes that mechanical machines built by human beings can fail.
Therefore, the railroad works very hard to make sure that we maintain our equipment to the highest quality. However, if something unforeseen happens beyond the railroad's control, these trips will be diesel.
Please understand this when you purchase a ticket.
